As Youth in Auroville – How Shall We Celebrate Auroville’s 50th Anniversary in 2018?
What happened on 28th February 1986?
Auroville, the City of Dawn, was inaugurated on February 28th, 1968. Youth representing 124 nations and 23 Indian states deposited a handful of their native soil into the Urn, a marble clad structure in the form of a symbolic lotus bud, located in the centre of Auroville.
During the inauguration ceremony, the Greetings from Auroville and the Auroville Charter were read out in many languages. These documents remain the guides for Aurovilians in their daily life, in policy development, and in decisions, big and small.
“Greetings from Auroville to all [people] of goodwill. Are invited to Auroville all those who thirst for progress and aspire to a higher and truer life.” The Mother, 28th Feb. 1968
The Auroville Charter
Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to live in Auroville one must be a willing servitor of the divine consciousness.
Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual human unity.
The aim of Auroville was described by The Mother as:
“Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women from all countries will be able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.
The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity.”
The Mother, 20th Sept. 1966
